review
Well, it is over!!! Woohoo! I have my nights back to sleep. lol. All in all besides for the late nights (4am wake up time for work) it was a really great class. I did, somehow, learn quite a bit. Thank you very much for being as entertaining as you are and putting everything into english. Me, not knowing a lick about music, was awfully scared when you said we would be learning how to read music. Like i said, thank you very much, it was a great class! And I hope that everyone enjoys the rest of their summer!!!!

To me, The Presidents pretty much are my childhood. They were the other side of me, the side of m that only my closest friends knew about. They are funny and tell stories in their songs. Makes me think of a 90s version of a jongleur. Purely entertainment, and bottom of the hierarchy chain. They are the typical 90s band, they have a guitar and a base guitar and drums. Hope you enjoy!

I listened to the first 20 minutes. This was very beautiful and just like the title said, relaxing. As you know from my other blogs I am a big fan of the piano! Youtube recommended that I listened to this and they hit it spot on!
As the title also says, there is a violin and a piano. I want to say that there might be a keyboard also because there are different sounds but it still seems like it is in the keyboard family. I am also pretty sure this is in duple meter (I could be wrong though). There are times where it seems like the violin is accompanying the piano and also the other way around. Keeping the audiences attention. Now is this in a minor? Is that why they call it sad piano and violin? I don't find it sad. I feel it is deep and meaningful, very beautiful and relaxing. Far from sad.

I am going to write about Elle King's Americas Sweetheart. I have just recently stumbled upon Elle King, just about a week ago. She is another one that I just love her voice! The raspy, blues, don't really know how to explain, but its just not perfect! Which is what makes it so good. You can hear a few times throughout the song when he voice cracks and shes almost yell/singing/screaming. This song has great "old country" vibe to it. It has a banjo! And you can definitely slap your knee to it while your driving your truck on the back road with a can of cheap beer in your cup holder (I would never do this!)! The tempo speeds up and slows down in between chorus and verses and at the end of the song she speeds everything up just a little bit more! Great all around and it is done very well. Imperfections and all!

I am going to write about George Gershwin's Summertime. It is a very beautiful song and quite instrumental. I hear what I think is a clarinet and drums and many other things! I looked it up after I got lost with all the instruments and it is written for an orchestra. So, many instruments! Even though I love the version with no words, I also love the Billie Holliday version (with words). Its a very beautiful song either way. And I also really really love the version that I have on my familiar list by Kat Edmonson. As I said in a previous journal I love her voice! She would make George Gershwin proud I do believe! And, although her version, at least the version that I listened to today, only has a piano instead of the orchestra, it still sounds amazing!
It is very interesting to me how doesn't solo but concentrates on specific instruments during different times throughout the song. Its almost like he gives them all a chance to shine but still allows the rest of the orchestra to accompany.

then I listened to All the Small Things (because when someone says Blink 182 this is the first song that most people think of) https://youtu.be/9Ht5RZpzPqw I remember when this video came out and it was the funniest thing ever because they were making fun of all the pop boy band videos! All time memorable video I think I could watch it about 15 times in a row! Oh the 90sish!

I am going to write about Adams Song. Since the first few chapters of this class I suppose i have learned quite a bit! I can tell you that i liked the song a lot more before the class because now I almost feel like they have no talent. Even though they really do and I can still enjoy their music. But it really has no change in much. The only change would be when they introduce the piano playing the same but different rhythm around the 3 minute mark. Of course the chorus has a little different of a tune but really not that exciting. What I am most disappointed about listening to all of these in a row they all start to sound the same. :( Oh Blink 182, YOU MUST MIX IT UP A BIT MORE!!! Thank you for being a great Pandora station to jog to though!

After listening to all of these songs a few times each I now know why I do not always listen to punk music. I think it gave me a slight headache and its all so repetitious. The words are different. But just as any other genre they are singing (or yelling) about the same things, RELATIONSHIPS. Again there really was not much change in tempo or dynamics (sometimes they were screaming...) not much change in the melody. All of the songs were homophonic. (I think that the monks would be disappointed that they helped create this kind of music, definitely not sacred music at all!!!)

week 3
When I think of texture in music the first thing that comes to mind is dance music / techno / electronic / house / progressive / trance all those sorts of things. so...
The first song I listened to was Morgan Page - Open Heart
then Morgan Page - Longest Road
yes there is a theme! I chose this DJ because I know that this type of music is not what everyone really enjoys but since it is euro its not as bad as progressive or trance which do not always have a lot of words and are more just sounds. Anyways then song 3.
Morgan Page - Fight for You
And song 4 which is the one I will be commenting on.
Morgan Page - In the Air
Now this song is an electronicly mixed song so the musical instruments... some of them I have no clue purely because they are a DJ mixer board thing (not sure one the correct terminology). But Morgan Page starts this particular song with what to me songs like either a xylophone or a glockenspiel I am not sure which one. After the intro the singer comes in softer than one would think but quickly builds when the rest of the "musical instruments" join in. Although there is a lot going on in the background there really is a great melody between it all. You wouldn't think that all these sounds would sound so good and complete together. The tempo is constantly changing in this music and it keeps you very interested on what Mr. Morgan Page is going to come up with next.
My unfamiliar music for the week. I chose to keep with the same type of music (kind of). I googled what was the first techno music. Google came up with Detroit Techno. Me being an avid listener of all sorts of the dance music genre was really surprised that i had never heard of it before. And I guess... maybe I have, AND SHUT IT OFF IMMEDIATELY!!! Some relate certain types of music to certain types of drugs and I think you would have to be on something special to really enjoy this music. I feel it much worse than some of the trance and other non worded music I have heard. Anyways... First song. Undergrounds Resistance - Punisher

The one thing that I can really say about this is that at almost any point you could stop the song and I would feel both complete and incomplete cadence. Complete because it is staccato like (and I'm excited to turn it off) but also incomplete (only a little bit though) because at very few moments your questioning what about the next minute. I really do not think that I could name 1 musical instrument used in these 3 songs. The last one though (unfortunately?) had words. They too sounded electronic. I do not believe that they added anything good to the song. But the song was about UFOs so kind of an odd subject whether they be just making music or being homophonic.

week 2
my week 2 listening journal familiar was this song
Kat Edmonson - Rainy Day Woman 3:45 (listened to 3 times)

The combination of the saxophone and keyboard and bass guitar are perfectly molded for this new aged jazz song. I love this artist because she makes the jazz sound more modern. She has the old classic voice from the 30s and 40s, puts a new spin on it and keeps you interested threw the whole song by using different pitches and slightly adjusting the melody and throwing in different instruments at different times.
The sequence during the end of the song when she says, "no one loves you like I do" builds up the anticipation to the end of the song. It makes the words mean more and more each time that she says them.

I really enjoyed this piece because of the vocal range and the I think it would be the climax even thought it is towards the beginning of the song when the vocalist is finally joined by the entire orchestra instead of just the piano. One of the big differences that I see in "new aged jazz" (at least that is what i would call it) compared to jazz is the use of scat. we might use the same melody and tempo (or close to) but it doesn't have the same feel due to no scat. The orchestra did a beautiful job combining their sound for this creation.
